SMALL SCHOOL WITH A BIG
REPUTATION
The school doors were
opened in 1940 by the first headmaster, Mr. Claude Mullan.
It was named SPRINGS HIGH as it was situated in the mining
community of Springs and also because it was co-educational
which consisted of BOTH girls and boys. It was built to
accommodate 400 learners.
The school colours i.e.
GREEN and GOLD were also adopted in 1940. Green was suggested by
Mr Mullan as he was from Irish decent and yellow to represent
the many gold mines in and around Springs.
The badge, designed in
1940, has three sub-divisions in it:-
1. The first
division being the Southern Cross.
2. The second division is taken from the municipal
coat-of-arms, symbolizing water and gold.
3. The third is the lamp of knowledge, which
symbolizes the striving for continuous academic
excellence.
The school pine tree was
planted at the opening ceremony of the school and symbolises the
growth of the school.
Our school motto was
suggested in 1940 by a Latin teacher, MRS. SMART, it being: "ESTO
PERPETUA - freely translated it means to exist forever"
To this day there have
only been 5 headmasters -
Mr. Claude Mullan (1940 -
1960) led the school from its official opening, through the
difficult time of the second world war, the post-war period and
into the fifties when the girls moved to the new Springs Girls'
High School and this school became a monastic school for boys
only. The "Old" school hall was named after Mr. Mullan. Mr.
Harold Marston served from 1961 to 1975 and the main quadrangle
was named after him. Mr. Jaap Liebenberg was the headmaster from
1975 to 1981 and in that time, the pavilion was built, which
bears his name. Mr. Bob Gouldie then served the school from 1982
until 1993. The "new" school hall is proudly named after this
remarkable educator that, was at Boys' High as a pupil, was the
Head Boy in his matric year, taught his alma mater and was later
appointed Head Master. The present Headmaster, Mr. André French,
was appointed in 1994.
TEACHING STAFF:
Boys' High has a proud
record of excellent educators. It has a full compliment of GDE
educators. In addition the SGB also subsidises more than 10
educators annually.
Mr. Dennis Watson is the
teacher with the longest service to the school - 35 years of
teaching at the school. He was head of the English Department.
Many of our current teachers have had many years of devoted
service and the following ex "Springs High" learners chose to
teach their Alma Mater.
Mr. Dean Garnett, Head of
Department: Economic Sciences, has been a teacher at Springs
Boys' High School since 02/01/1983. Interesting is that one of
his athletics records still stands today - it is 42,68m for
Discus. Mr. M.Marais was also a learner at this school and has
served this school faithfully since 1986. Mr D. Cresswell is a
qualified artisan and has served his alma mater in the Technical
Departments since 2003. Our deputy Principal, Mrs. D Freeman,
has been teaching Geography to our learners since 1987 and was
also a "girl in green" having matriculated at our sister school,
Springs Girls' High.
IT MUST BE NOTED:
We are proud of the
achievements of this illustrious school over the years but more
than that, this school prepares and provides our pupils with a
sound base to enter the work place. The staff of this school are
highly qualified academically and provide tuition of an
exceptionally high standard. Boys' High is as good as the "men
it made of its pupils" - we have every reason to be proud of our
"Old Boys".
THE
SCHOOL SONG
" ESTO PERPETUA "
Let all the children sing
Our glorious motto be
Till sounding echoes ring
The torch of light we share
At home, at school or where.
We'll hold our head up high
And proud her name to bear.
Refrain:
Sing, sing, sing
Till the echoes ring
Sing sing, sing
Till the echoes ring.
We'll hold our flag up
high
With colours green and gold
Now and forever true
Traditions to uphold
The fount of knowledge gained
To keep the golden rule
"Esto Perpetua"
For Springs Boys' High.
THE SCHOOL PRAYER
O Lord God of truth, whom
to know is everlasting life and to serve is perfect freedom,
grant that we may draw near to Thee in thought, word and deed.
Inspire us with the love
of Thy creatures and Thy laws, so that with Patience and
understanding, by honest and earnest labour, we may seek after
knowledge as a blessing that cometh from Thee.
Whether it be our part to
teach or to learn, to rule or obey, make us feel They presence
in our several duties, filling us with reverence for the beauty
and wonder of Thy universe and pouring on us a spirit of
justice, gentleness and mutual goodwill.
Thus by Thy grace, may we
so use this house of learning that we may prepare our powers of
body, mind, spirit, to advance the good of man and the glory of
God.
BENEDICTION
May the Lord Bless and
keep us. May the Lord be kind to us. And look on us with favour.
May the Lord shed the light Of his countenance upon us And give
us peace Now and forever more.
AMEN
